You don't need a big backyard to grow your own food. A well-chosen raised bed turns a courtyard, a side path or a bit of paving into a productive garden.
Side paths and fence lines
That narrow strip down the side of the house is often wasted space. A slimline bed has rounded ends and starts at just 600mm wide, so it fits along a fence and still leaves room to walk past. Try a 600mm wide slimline bed, 1800 to 2500mm long.
Courtyards and paving
Raised beds sit straight on pavers or concrete, so you can grow herbs and greens right outside the back door. A round bed 800mm across or a 1000mm round bed makes a neat feature in a corner.
Small backyards
A compact rounded square bed 850mm wide gives you a proper veggie patch without taking over the yard.
Tips for small spaces
- Choose a colour that matches your fence or house so the bed blends in.
- Grow up: add a trellis for beans, peas and cucumbers.
- Pick compact crops like herbs, lettuce, cherry tomatoes and chillies.
- On paving, an unsealed base keeps soil in while letting water drain.
