It's one of the first questions people ask when they're thinking about a rainwater tank. Here's where things stand in Victoria, and where to look for any local offers.
Is there a statewide rebate?
Not at the moment for most households. Victoria used to run a statewide water rebate program that included rainwater tanks, but it closed in 2015. Since then there hasn't been a general rebate that every Victorian household can claim.
Where offers do pop up
- Your water corporation. Some water corporations, especially in regional Victoria, run water efficiency rebates from time to time. Check your water retailer's website or call them.
- Your local council. A few councils offer sustainability grants or rebates. Search your council's website for "rainwater tank" or "sustainability rebate".
- Bushfire and drought recovery programs. The Victorian Government has run recovery programs for rural households affected by bushfires and for farm water infrastructure during drought. These are usually limited to certain areas and time periods. Check water.vic.gov.au for anything current.
Rebates change often, so always check the details and eligibility with the organisation running them before you buy. Some require you to apply before the tank is installed.
A tank pays its way anyway
Even without a rebate, a tank earns its keep:
- Free water for the garden all year, including during water restrictions.
- Rainwater is great for veggies, with no chlorine.
- A lower water bill, especially if you connect it to the toilet or laundry.
- A steel tank lasts for decades, with a 20 year corrosion warranty on our tanks.
